Mechanical engineers analyse and develop technological systems that involve motion. They help society to harness the energy and forces that exist in nature. The conception, design, manufacturing, maintenance and management of systems, ranging from micromechanical devices through to massive power-generating turbines, are all within the scope of mechanical engineering.

Modern air and ground transport systems, and thermal power generation are a few key examples of mechanical engineering accomplishments.

This course may lead to a career in the design and specification of components or entire systems, design and planning of manufacturing processes, plant operation and maintenance, consulting, project management, research and development, or management within a wide range of industries such as power generation, air conditioning, mining, mineral and material processing, transport, water supply and their support industries.

Mechanical engineers are sought for their wide breadth of skills and knowledge across a range of engineering enterprises – from small companies to consultancies and large multinational corporations. Curtin’s mechanical engineering graduates have the knowledge, skills and adaptability to be successful in the workplace.

What the course involves

In your first year you will complete the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY). The EFY builds a solid base of the fundamental concepts common to all areas of engineering. The EFY was developed in partnership with industry to create a curriculum that is reflective of engineering practice.

This course is fundamentally oriented to provide learning and skills development opportunities with hands-on experience. In your final year you will undertake an individual design/research project.

You will also need to complete at least 480 hours of engineering work experience in order to graduate.

As part of a double degree program, you can study Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) with Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Accounting, Economics, Finance or Management)
